Is it possible to do this within the theme?

For example, I like the option of using a full width slider but would also like the functionality of the sidebar/widgets.

Hi,

Widgets in WordPress can only be used in Appearance/Widgets.

Shortcodes are possible inside the Page Builder, though some shortcodes from plugins might not always work.
