Hi Guys
I’m having some issues getting a good PageSpeed ranking. I tried testing a blank site with 2 font face fonts.
Yslow gives me an overall grade B score. And grade D on Make fewer HTTP requests.
PageSpeed Insights gives me a 49 on mobile and 84 on desktop computers.
Pingdom tools gives med 84 / 100
Is there any way to boost these scores? Especially Google is pretty essential.
January 13, 2017 at 3:27 pm #310065Hi,
- Install WP Super Cache
- Ask your host to enable gzip compression.
- Consider serving your resources from a CDN such as MaxCDN.
- The Autoptimize plugin is great to further minify your assets: https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/autoptimize/
January 16, 2017 at 7:15 pm #310334Hi David
Thank you for your answer. I am really trying to get to the bottom of this, so please bear with me.
1) MaxCDN is now called StackPath. It is now enabled for the website.
2) AutoOptimize gives me a HTTPS failure. See attached. Also it brought the PageSpeed ranking down to 30.
3) Gzip is enabled for my NGINX server and for the StackPath CDN.
4) I have installed WP super cache and configured it according to this article: https://support.stackpath.com/hc/en-us/articles/222872207-WordPress-with-WP-Super-Cache-StackPath-CDN-Setup-Guide
I am still getting very poor results with Google PageSpeed. Can you provide me with more guidance? This site in question is blank. Here isn’t any custom code beside two font face fonts added. The page should get in the 90’s range, if not 100%. Why is the score so low right now?

Yes, Pingdom tools are good.
But Google Pagespeed is crucial, as the speed will influence the ranking of the webpage to some extend.
I’ve attached the results below. On mobile it’s down to 61/100.
Any suggestions as to how to fix things Google list?

Google tell you what to fix in the screenshot. Aside from the slow server, you could test using this plugin: https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/above-the-fold-optimization/
January 19, 2017 at 2:00 pm #310790Hi
Yes, but the things that need to be fixed is part of your theme. My point is: shouldn’t a blank theme be able to achieve a score of 100? Or close to it? The things Google ask me to fix are an integrate part of your theme, and will require extensive rewriting. Probably to the point where you might as well start from scratch when developing a website.
January 19, 2017 at 2:17 pm #310792You won’t need to re-anything. Use the above plugin to eliminate the first red warning.
This is plugin territory, not default theme functionality as such.
