    I want to make a full width colored section that I can put builder elements in to. I know I can make a full width picture and a full width text section. Is that possible?

    You will have to create the full width section, and add the asset that you want to go inside below the full width section, then switch to visual editor and cut and paste the asset shortcode inside the full width shortcode.

    Please note that this is not something that is supported with the theme so it may not work.
