Extra large featured images

The featured image on my posts is WAYYYY too big for my site and overpowers the articles. I figured out how to disable them totally in the post php, but I want them still there, but just smaller size. How can I accomplish this? On low resolution screens, the image isn’t too big, but on high resolution (especially wide screens) where the user has the browser maximized, the image is just gigantic.
