a simple responsive bootstrap contact form would be preferable to a contact plugin that will further slow down the theme

Hi there,

Using a plugin such as Contact Form 7 shouldn’t slow down your site anymore than a custom form would, but it has much more flexibility.

It wouldn’t be sensible to add our own contact form, as many people have their preferences and we’ll always be requested to add more features that are already available in said plugins.
