If I wanted to replace the background image for this theme with one large picture, what size does that image need to be resized to?

Hi, the fact that there are many differently sized screens and different resolutions from which your website can be viewed makes a “perfect size in any case” difficult. I’d say as big as possible, landscape mode.
You can google for the various resolutions that exist and choose one of the bigger ones.
