Say that someone has this theme installed on multiple domains on different instances of wordpress. Would it be possible to have the theme read a certain .mo file from any static url outside of the actual wordpress installation? Why? Because then one would only need to update and maintain one .mo file for each language using the same theme on different domains.

I recommend asking in the general wordpress forums for that, because as the language is defined in the wp-config.php of the wordpress core, that might be the place to change if you could. Cheers
