    Hi,
    I want to use icons in the footer menu instead of text.
    Can I do this via the menu options ‘Custom Menu Options / Button Style Menu Item’ or is this a custom thing?
    What is the right way to put the font awesome shortcodes in the menu options?

    Please try to use code like:-
    <i class="fa fa-facebook" ></i>

    on an icon-related issue: how do I place an icon over an image?

    I couldn’t see how so I created an image by layering icon (not fa) over image but when I tried to upload it failed – both png and jpg versions failed

    You can use an image banner shortcode and add an icon shortcode inside it
