thumbnails for recent posts and smartphone view

If you look at the live demo of the Neighborhood theme you can see at this page that they have made a sidebar where the small imageges appear below “Recent Posts”.
http://neighborhood.swiftideas.net/blog-standard-with-no-sidebars/blog-standard-with-right-sidebar/ So how do I do that?

I have noticed something else in the meantime and that is when you open the theme using your smartphone. If you see picture I have attached there are some weird chinese symbols or something. How can that be fixed? Because the menu is actually also one of the symbols!
