    Seems to have worked for me? Problem is the icon and background colour are the same on hover

    Ok it worked, but what i need to change is the color of the background/ box around the icon, not the icon itself.

    Ok you need this instead:

    ul.social-icons li.facebook > a:hover {
  background-color: #efefef;
}

    and repeat for the others
