What is the best way to insert a common image and/or snippet of text on every page (with the ability to change this image and/or text so that it changes across all pages where it appears)?

An example of this would be an announcement that might change periodically. Another example: a video that might be replaced routinely with a newer video?

Is there a shortcode in your theme to do this? If not, what simple plugin that’s compatible with your theme would you recommend?

You would need to modify the php files to add a custom meta field to your custom fields,
