what is ss-gizmo? is it safe to delete /cardinal/css/ss-gizmo.css and all other references to it? any suggestions to do so in child functions.php?

That is one of the included icon fonts. You can copy down the sf_enqueue_styles() function from functions.php and then replace the code within (likely the same but with the gizmo line removed).
