In lack of proper thumbnail display in WooCommerce, is it in some way possible to let users decide the cropping of images when uploading? And limit the available thumbnail size to something that will let the theme look good? And KEEP the original file, just to make it possible to at least see it in full view?

    Hi @torb,

There is proper thumbnail display, however as per WooCommerce standard setup – the size is set in WooCommerce > Settings. All images must be at least this size, and then they are cropped to fit, and form a correctly sized & spaced grid. Having different sized images would not look great, we have looked into it.

It’s something we may provide in the future, however if it’s something you need now then you’d need to make the changes yourself – unfortunately we can’t assist with modifications on this level.

I understand this is beyond the scope of you support. But the settings you provide in the demo/documentation does not generate the pictures in the demo shop, do they? That means you have (1) another size on your demo images, (2) they are the same size, and (3) they are cropped according to one of the width or height settings in the documentation (not both, otherwise they would have been square).

So what size have you used to be able to have the demo look good?

To be able to use the theme for a shop in real life, do you know what the best or easiest way of making sure every user uploads product images in the exact same size / aspect ratio would be? Do you know of any plugin that would fit into the upload process, and force the user to crop the image to the desired size when uploading?

I know this got nothing to do with you either, but I find it kind of strange or even unbelievable that there is no solution for product images of various sizes in 2014. The easy way out is of course a masonry/isotope view – but that seems equally impossible to get working with WooCommerce.

    Hi @torb,

On our demo sites, we have the image sizes set in WooCommerce Settings like so: https://www.dropbox.com/s/r6t4jc45f3osu28/Screenshot%202014-08-25%2005.01.28.png?dl=0

Then, all our images that have been uploaded (after these settings were set) are above those sizes. That way, they are always resized/cropped to fit those sizes, and thus display as the same size on the shop page.

You can set these settings as low as you like (within reason), but bear in mind the lower they are, then you may encounter image quality issues.

I think the only reason that it’s not so widespread, is because it doesn’t look great – especially for a shop with products. It just doesn’t look professional or easy to use for a customer.

Before you turn this down as impossible, could you have a look at http://www.pixedelic.com/themes/geode/white/product-category/apparel/mens-shoes/

Another provider that actually has managed to provide an integrated masonry view… proving it is not impossible 🙂

Is this something you could consider adding to the product?

By the way, a masonry/isotope view look better when the products are not the same dimensions. E.g. Shoes, shirts, jeans, jewelry – there is no way you can show a (whole) pair of jeans and a piece of jewelry within the same boundaries. You would either have to crop the picture of the jeans, or add a lot of nothingness around the jewelry to make the aspect ratio the same as you would need for a pair of jeans. Same size pictures look very good for similar products (as in your demo) – when selling different kind of products (real life), it does not look good. The simple solution is to use a masonry, where each image can keep its aspect ratio.

    Hi @torb,

We’ll definitely consider it for an update, however given our customers requests, we’ve only had this requested less than 5 times across all themes.

I can’t personally remember the last time I browsed an online shop where the product listings were displayed in a non-uniformed masonry layout.

People didn’t ask for the Macintosh, either.

@torb – that’s true, but this isn’t the same. Masonry products listing have obviously be done, but I think 99% of people would agree like in the example you’ve provided, it is not clear it’s a shop.

It’s also unclear how well it would work given WooCommerce’s image options, but as I said – we’ll consider looking into it.

I will have another go….. have set image dimensions to 500×700, 500×700 and 200×200 respectively. Due to the fact that not every image is resized, I have used a plugin called “Force regenerate thumbnails” and “Thumbnail upscale” to make sure every image is generated in the correct size. I have also runned “Regenerate thumbnails” afterwards, in my quest for correct sized thumbnails. Nevertheless, I get this in the theme when viewing some of the single products:

Warning: imagecreatetruecolor(): Invalid image dimensions in /var/www/html/wp-includes/media.php on line 1987 Warning: imagecopyresampled() expects parameter 1 to be resource, boolean given in /var/www/html/wp-includes/class-wp-image-editor-gd.php on line 180 Warning: imagecreatetruecolor(): Invalid image dimensions in /var/www/html/wp-includes/media.php on line 1987 Warning: imagecopyresampled() expects parameter 1 to be resource, boolean given in /var/www/html/wp-includes/class-wp-image-editor-gd.php on line 180

And of course I get no image.

I have no idea where this comes from, but maybe you have?

    I found this: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8934225/imagecopyresized-invalid-image-dimensions

Every image is sucessfully resized according to the debugging information:

    “dis2” (ID 4632)

    BaseDir: /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads
    BaseUrl: http://sitename.com/wp-content/uploads
    Image: /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/dis2.jpg

    Regenerate: 1200×1200, 1280×720, 1800×1200, 200×200, 220×150, 250×250, 500×500, 500×700, 600×450, 900×675, 94×70
    Successfully regenerated in 2,398 seconds

I do not know if the theme uses theses image sizes, but I guess they are generated for a reason.

Turning off “Thumbnail upscale” makes the images show in single product view – but a lot of the thumbnails are to small to look good… so is it no way I can make good looking thumbnails?
