I have two Portfolio related questions. Firstly is there a way to have a widget sidebar on a Portfolio Items page? Also is there a way to rename my Portfolio to something other then ‘Portfolio’. I have categories and want to use the framework of Portfolios but want them to be called something different in the top menu and permalinks.

Sidebars aren’t possible as standard on portfolio item pages.

You can change the rewrite by following this guide – http://support.swiftideas.net/knowledgebase/portfolio-url-rewrite/
