OK – I have followed this to the letter. Site hosted with one.com.
    http://letsguide.it/cms/wordpress/relocation/

Checked all links in sql database were changed from
    http://www.soundtwisters.co.uk/site
    to

    home

    Re-imported etc.

I noticed everything was wrong – no logo, no top navigation, everything returned to default (although media library and pages all intact).

I have lost ALL my custom CSS (which was extensive), all the font settings and so on. Why is this? I may be able to “roll back” but why should it involve all this extra work?

    Thanks, Dan

I should say I am working towards restoring it, but the main thing that I have lost is custom CSS and fonts with line spacing, size and so on – clearly, the database was imported correctly and when I first logged in Cardinal was selected – so why have I lost all of this?

There is the standard footer which I disabled. The promo bar, which I styled and so on, is now off with no options… it goes on!
