I would like to change the main menu to have a “hover” background of #000 and text of #fff, with the same for focused or current page. Can code be entered into the theme options custom css/js section and if so, what code would need to be added?

Hi,
You can change that easily from the theme customizer menu. Please goto Themes -> Customize which will take you to the live cutomizer where you can change the colors in the ‘Colors-Navigation’ tab.
