    Hi,

I’m using the Dante theme which we have highly customised, when I last updated to the latest Dante version I lost all my customisation so now I’m hesitant to update.

Is there a way you can get the latest theme without losing all your customisation?

    Many Thanks

    Jon

    Hi

You’ve edited the theme files? You’re supposed to use a child theme for that. You wont be able to update without losing your customisations.

It is important that all customisations you make should be through a child theme, or you can add custom CSS to theme options. Any edits to the parent theme will get overwritten

Ah ok, this project was passed on to me from another company which set the whole thing up for us and they have obviously neglected to use a child theme and edit that!(sorry I’m new to WordPress)

Anyway I can still create a child theme and use that or am I too far down the road?

    Thanks

No that won’t be possible unless you know all the changes that were made.

That’s not what I wanted to hear ๐Ÿ™

Ok so say I want to start fresh with a child theme what code do I use in functions.php to enqueue ALL of the css files?

You don’t, child themes import everything from the parent theme automatically, you just use it to add extra things; like functions, css etc.

Is there no way I can override that and also carry across css files like responsive.css & JS files such as functions.js then update the theme without losing any changes?

    Thanks

No I’m afraid child themes don’t work like that, sorry

Ok I made a child theme and by using K-diff to compare the files I could see which changes I had made.

I then put these changes in the correct place (Custom CSS/JS) and after much retrofitting I now have a working website with all the customisation that is running the latest theme version! ๐Ÿ™‚ Only a few minor niggles left to sort.

    Thanks
