  Can I hide the categories which are shown under the product title in the “recently viewed” sidebar.

  That code should work 100% .You have syntax mistake in your custom css so thats not working . Please go to Admin -> Theme Options -> General Options -> Custom CSS -> Here find all css code

  #header {
  background: url(http://shop.garsons.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Header-01.
  .product_list_widget span.product-cats {
  display: none!important;
  }

  Change with this correct code

  #header {background: url(http://shop.garsons.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Header-01.png)}
  .product_list_widget span.product-cats {display: none!important;}

  Now neither works. I’ve have changed the customer css. My background image in the header has gone completely and the categories still show under recently viewed in my sidebar.
