Hello,
I have seen some version of this variations image issue come up a couple times in the support forum, but have not found a clear solution.
When selecting a variation that is different from the default choice, the variation image for that selection replaces the first image in the product image gallery.
You can see this issue on the Atelier demo site here:
http://swiftideas.com/product/achilles-low/
Specifically, when selecting the “Sand” color shoe, and then selecting all other variations, the image is correctly switched to the Sand color shoes. But, rather than scroll to the correct image (the fourth image), this Sand product image seems to replace the first image in the series, which is the image of the single black shoe, which then disappears from the large image area all-together, and can no longer be accessed by its thumbnail, unless the black color is re-selected. In this case, the second black shoe pair replaces the first single black shoe image.
Is there a quick fix for this issue? Thank you for your time.

You just need to hit the button “Clear selection” and it changes again to the default.

June 9, 2015 at 7:47 pm #182980Hi Rui,
Thanks, that does clear out the selection, but it is rather confusing for the buyer to have thumbnails that do not correspond to the displayed image, as well as for some thumbnails to stop displaying all-together.
Is this the default WooCommerce functionality? Am just not sure why the first image is replaced with the variation.
In any case, thanks for the response.

The image is replaced by the variation images because it may not correspond to the images of the selected product variation.
Imagine that is a product that is completely different depending on the variation selected? It doesn’t make sense keep displaying the original one.

June 10, 2015 at 1:27 am #183054Hi Rui,
Thank you for your response. I’m afraid I am not explaining the issue very well.
I understand that the main image changes, depending on the relevant variation that is selected. This works fine.
The problem is that this variation image is then connected to the first thumbnail in the series, regardless of what that thumbnail is. In other words, once a variation is selected, the first thumb image and the main image that it loads no longer match.
In the example on your demo site, once you select the sand variation, the first thumbnail, which is a single black shoe, now loads a main image that is a pair of sand shoes.

This is clearly an error, either with WooCommerce’s default variations behavior, or with the theme’s handling of variations.

Yes I’m afraid that is WooCommerce functionality.
Basically you set an image for each product variation, which changes the main image. What we did is also add a product gallery of both the colours, however the product gallery is in now way linked to the variation images. You will see this on any theme you use if it’s set up that way.
What you can do is remove the product gallery, so that only the main image for each variation is used

Understood. Perhaps a fix for this issue will make it into some future WooCommerce update, given that many themes provide a similar gallery approach to products.
In any case, thanks for the explanation.

One more thought on this: Here is an example that seems to implement variations, in a gallery format, that does appear to work correctly:

Not sure this will example will be of use, but thought it might be worth a look.

June 10, 2015 at 11:20 pm #183389Hi,
I made some confusion here because I thought that this situation of clicking in the 1st thumbnail was showing the original one.
Thanks for the suggestion.
